Concord 2003: Debut CD release - 'The Time, The Season'
If you are an open-minded listener, looking for a fresh sound…If you like to let your heart dance even when the mind is still figuring things out…If you like a good balance between fun & seriousness, between what you know and what is new, then this CD is a must-have.
Born in Soweto, Johannesburg, Concord Nkabinde’s interest in music began at age 10, in church. He got involved with many gospel music bands and later ventured into the broader scope of the music industry. This overwhelming scope convinced Nkabinde that he needed to acquire more knowledge. He then pursued a Bmus. Degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Natal, Durban.
He then went into teaching music full-time, in Soweto & Johannesburg, before deciding to pursue a career as a studio and a travelling musician. In a very shot space of time, Concord became an in-demand bass guitarist, working with the likes of Abdullah Ibrahim, Zim Ngqawana, Hugh Masekela, Ray Phiri and many others. At this stage Nkabinde also developed great leadership skills as a musical director and recording producer. Nkabinde’s work as a producer includes recordings by Joyous Celebration 1, Wendy Mseleku - “Picking up the pieces” and Tsunami – “From clay”.
Concord Nkabinde’s work has not only been confined to the borders of South Africa. He has toured internationally with Johnny Clegg, Zim Ngqawana, Darius Brubeck, Deepak Ram, Ray Phiri, Gito Baloi, to mention a few. Concord’s creative musicianship has also been used by international performing artists who have come to tour in South Africa, such as Roy Ayers (USA), Colin “Black” Vearncombe (U.K.), Sergio Diaz (Brazil), Efrain Toro (Puerto Rico), etc.
Concord has an enormous passion for cross-cultural collaboration projects. The mission of breaking down walls that tend to divide the people of the world is a path he has embraced with both hands and heart. This passion led him to involvement with a few projects of this nature : Shuttle 99 – South Africa & Nordic countries(1998/99); Beyond the rainbow – China & South Africa(2001); Gathering Forces – Jazz & Classical Indian music(1994/97); Southern Cross – South Africa & Brazil(1994);
Two Nations – U.K. & South Africa(1997); Imbizo – Finland & South Africa(2003).
Concord Nkabinde is currently performing as bass guitarist/vocalist for Johnny Clegg, Gloria Bosman, Ernie Smith & Neo Muyanga (BLK Sonshine).
It is with all this background and experience that CONCORD is now releasing his debut solo album. This recording showcases most of the styles and influences he has explored as a free-lance musician. Styles so vast and different, yet somehow he has achieved a common thread that ties these worlds together.
Concord has managed to single-handedly record, release, distribute and market the CD. It is now available across South Africa, Finland, Botswana & on line at www.oneworld.co.za. Tracks 3,5 & 9 have been doing very well on radio. The result has been a product embraced and enjoyed by those who have listened to it.
