Concord - "The time, The season"
Meet Concord Nkabinde, a multi-instrumentalist and talented musician who is a rare gem. This is Concord’s debut album, and it is his time to shine, after doing wonders for countless musicians in their projects.
Soweto-born Concord showed an interest in music at the age of 10. He has played as bass guitarist for Hugh Masekela, Abdullah Ibrahim and Zim Ngqawana, amongst others.
He has toured internationally with Darius Brubeck, Johnny Clegg and other top artists, and has performed along side overseas acts who have toured South Africa
Presently he is a bassist/vocalist for Clegg, Gloria Bosman, Ernie Smith and Neo Muyanga of Blk Sunshine fame. He has also produced albums including the late
Wendy Mseleku’s Picking up the pieces and Joyous Celebration 1.
His album is mature, and it’s fascinating that the track Calypsoweto features his two-year-old niece. Apart from enjoying the track Hola, which is done in both Zulu and Spanish, you will appreciate the instruments he uses.
“My sound has been influenced by musical and non-musical aspects of my life. Life in Soweto is definitely one of them, says Concord. “The stories of resilience told by people who have had to rise from emotional and political ashes have found their way into my heart”.
For me the track has found a way to my heart is the mellow No seed, No life, which is dedicated to Wendy Mseleku and Moses Taiwa Molelekwa. Gito Baloi returns a favour on Canciones de amor, while trumpeter Prince Lengoasa is featured on Ngizw’ ingoma.
For those who don’t want to work and instead wait for things to happen, Concord has a message for you: Vuka Uzenzele, which means, don’t wait for tomorrow.
On this 14-track album, he has other tracks to look out for, such as Africa(Ithemba lethu), Let the walls fall down, Uhamb’ ubhekephi(Which talks about HIV/AIDS), U make me fly. I think it’s about time we all let Concord shine – It’s his time, and season.
